SACRED TO THE MEMORY of the admirable Reverend JEREMIAH COLLINS, Doctor of Divinity, etc. etc. the nuns of this convent have placed this stone in gratitude and sorrow. This faithful servant, endowed with grace, fortified with courage, and following in Christ’s footsteps, did everything well. Called to the Lord’s service and thinking little of his own interests, he preached fruitfully, and carried out the other duties of his ministry with tireless zeal; compelled to accept a pastoral position and acting with love he succeeded not by a show of strength but by gentleness, so that would rather do good than preside over others. Made in the image of his flock, and a model priest, he cared greatly for the beauty of the house of God; and the churches and convents of wondrous beauty he founded live on as monuments to his mind and character. The Presentation Order, dear in the sight of the Lord, created in this city by our pious founder HONORA NAGLE of happy memory, he helped and nurtured with a concern beyond all expectation; this outstanding and wondrous mission given to us by God – to bring light to those who live in darkness – blossomed under his protection from this very beginning and flourished, spreading far and wide its roots nourished by grace. This mission, as if entrusted to him by heaven while his life endured, he endowed with money and good counsel; this mission, as a gift worthy of the Lord, given by Him for the salvation of souls, as his death drew near he consecrated to God and to Ireland, and like Simon saying ‘Nunc dimittis’, full of his works and years, he went to sleep in the Lord on the 7th of December in the year of our salvation 1829, aged 73. MAY HE REST IN PEACE.
